John Person, a struggling actor, offers to drive a blue suitcase from Los Angeles all the way to Baker, California, and deliver it over to an enigmatic cowboy in exchange for having his $27,000 credit card debt forgiven. He can't find the cowboy, but he does get an unsettling delivery in the form of an ominous gift in the shape of a skull. While he's waiting, John becomes friendly with Ruthie, whose insane boyfriend Randy threatens to kill him.
