The First World War intervenes in the love story of sixteen-year-old Arturs. He finds some solace in joining the army after losing his mother and his home, because this is the first time national battalions are permitted in the Russian Empire. But war isn't what Arturs had envisioned–there's no glory, no justice. It's cruel and infuriating. Because his father and brother were killed in the war, Arturs is now utterly alone. Furthermore, little progress has been achieved in achieving the promised rapid end to the war and return home in a timely manner. Arturs finds strength for the final struggle and eventually goes home to start everything over, just like his newly founded country.
