Dr. Malcolm Sayer, a shy research physician, uses an experimental drug to"awaken" the catatonic victims of a rare disorder. Leonard is the first patient to receive the treatment that is contentious. His awakening, full of awe and excitement, proves a rebirth for Sayer too, because the exuberant patient reveals the simple but unutterably sweet delights of life to the doctor.
